Protecting a Place That Cannot Replace Itself

Responsible cave divers maintain neutral buoyancy, keep equipment tight to the body, use appropriate propulsion, and avoid placing hands, fins, or tanks on the cave. They take nothing and leave nothing. That includes resisting the temptation to force a path through a delicate restriction simply to get a photograph or claim a deeper penetration.

Respect also extends to local operations, landowners, guides, and fellow divers. A cenote is not a private playground. It is part of a complex natural and cultural landscape that deserves patience and care from everyone who enters.

Bring more than your certification card. Arrive current, rested, and honest about your recent diving experience. The region offers a range of conditions and objectives, so communicate clearly with your instructor or guide about your certification level, configuration, experience, comfort in restrictions, and goals for the trip. Often, it is the route where your skills allow you to notice every formation, every shaft of light, and every quiet turn in the line.
